Health and the Environment

A good deal of attention has been given to the fact that many leading flame retardants on the market today have a negative influence on our health and the environment. A number of the most dangerous brominates compounds have been prohibited as a result of national legislation and, for example, through EU initiative in the form of the chemical legislation REACH. More and more companies and manufacturers are voluntary choosing to phase out flame retardants within this category in light of growing opinion as well as policy decisions concerning health and the environment. With this comes decreased market share for this category of flame retardants since customers and end users choose other alternatives possessing properties that are better for health and the environment.

Apyrum is a flame retardant system that has been developed in order to provide a unique combination of advantages:
1. High-performance flame retardant attributes such as reduction in heat release,
increased smoke reduction and being self-extinguishing
2. Environmentally friendly through its entire life cycle.
This treatment can be used in most materials such as polymers, fibrous materials polyurethane (PUR), bitumen, latex, rubber, and paper, and can be applied to a number of industrial applications such as use in building material, furniture, woven and non-woven material, paper and boards, transportation, electronics, and surface sealants such as paint, varnishes, and glue. And also be used in combination with other systems in order to provide enhancement of existing flame-retardant properties.

System Description
The products are based on a method that changes the physical and chemical processes that takes place when a material is exposed to high heat, e.g. fire. To achieve the optimal balance between the physical, mechanical, and fire properties of the material, this must interact with the physical and chemical properties of the material, both during application and when exposed to heat.
The Apyrum method is highly focused on the material physics of a material and its transfer of energy. By influencing the change between the physical states of a material and thereby shortening the liquid and the gas phases, Apyrum can break the chain reaction, pyrolysis, which is a precondition for starting fire.
Apyrum is an intumescent flame retardant system that functions in multiple ways depending on the material and prevailing conditions; these functions are:
1. Endothermic reaction with superior thermal energy absorption
2. Intumescent / charring reaction which also prevents dripping of material in liquid state
3. Production of a char layer insulation removing fuel from the heat source and blocking oxygen
4. Smoke suppressant
